One of the most interesting projects to emerge from the MIPIM property investment conference held recently in Cannes centred on a planned regeneration of the former Coventry Telegraph building.
Developers are planning to convert the 1950’s building in central Coventry into a boutique hotel with meeting facilities.
They are also exploring the possibility of working in conjunction with the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry which sits alongside the Telegraph building.
The Belgrade Theatre is already a recognised conference venue but suffers from a lack of smaller rooms for small scale meetings and as breakout space. The hotel could fulfil this need.
The ground floor of the hotel would feature an informal gallery of Coventry’s 1950’s architecture as well as being a hub for meetings and events.
Meeting rooms at the hotel could be used for business events during the day and in the evening used to show art-house films for example. Both the hotel and the Belgrade Theatre could ‘feed off’ each other.
Currently the project is still on the drawing board. Developers are hoping to be in a position to apply for planning permission later this year which would allow for building work to start in 2018.
The complex would then be ready by 2021 -the year Coventry is bidding to become the UK City of Culture.
