Plans by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to transform a historic site into its first garden in the North West have secured a £5.5million funding boost - the development at Worsley New Hall in Salford is now under way.
The new 150 acre-plus garden will be known as RHS Garden Bridgewater and it forms part of the RHS 10-year £160million investment programme.
The creation of RHS Garden Bridgewater will be the largest gardening project in Europe. As well as various gardens, allotments, glasshouses, teaching and development space, RHS Garden Bridgewater will also include an events and learning space.
The first phase of the development will include restoration of the 11-acre walled garden expected to open summer 2019.
Phase two will see the opening of a new welcome building, including an events space, a learning space, offices, café, shop and plant centre – expected to open in 2020.
