One of Plymouth‘s key landmarks is to get a new lease of life as an events venue following a £155,000 upgrading by the city council.
Mount Batten Tower which stands at the entrance to Cattedown Water has been handed to the Mount Batten Watersports and Activity Centre who will run it as a venue.
Mount Batten Tower takes its name from Captain William Batten, a commander in Cromwell’s Parliamentarian navy in the mid-seventeenth century. It was built during the Commonwealth period and held up to 10 guns on the upper floor to protect the eastern side of the Plymouth estuary and defend the entrance to Cattewater and Sutton Harbour. From 1913 the headland was used as an airbase by the Royal Navy and then the Royal Air Force.
As well as offering a range of water-based activities from ‘stand-up paddleboarding’ to ‘dinghy sailing’, Mount Batten Tower now features a range of meeting facilities.
There are four main meeting and events rooms accommodating up to 120 delegates. They are equipped with projectors, flipcharts and free wifi.
Mount Batten Tower also features a decked outdoor terrace with views across Plymouth Sound.
Mount Batten Tower has a fully licensed bar and café serving breakfast through to dinner.
Mount Batten Tower is a short drive from the centre of Plymouth and offers free parking for delegates.
