Based in Birmingham, the Drum is the national centre dedicated to developing and promoting contemporary art and culture of the British African, Asian and Caribbean communities.
The Drum also has a range of meeting and event spaces and is planning a major extension of these facilities. The centrepiece of the Drum is the Main Auditorium, a blank canvas space which will accommodate up to 350 delegates theatre style or 750 delegates standing. Extension plans will see the capacity raised to 480 delegates theatre style or as standing space for up to 1000 people.
The Business Suite is a bright and open space equipped with a projector and whiteboard and seating up to 50 delegates theatre style.
The Andy Hamilton Studio, named after the Birmingham jazz saxophonist, is a self-contained space with its own stage and bar. It can be used for larger meetings or for team building exercises.
Planned extensions to the Drum will increase the overall height of the building. A striking new corrugated roof painted red is also part of the plan
.The Drum is located in Potters Lane in Aston, just over a mile from the centre of Birmingham - with free car parking. The site was originally the home of the Aston Hippodrome between 1908 and 1980 before being converted into a bingo hall until its final demolition 20 years later.A planning application for the extension has been lodged with Birmingham city council. If successful and funds are available, work will start spring 2016.
