Birmingham International Airport is providing a major boost to the region’s top tourist attractions in a new marketing campaign.
Birmingham International Airport is joining in a region-wide campaign to commemorate the 400th year of William Shakespeare’s death in 1616.
New artwork is being introduced in the arrivals area to greet the millions of visitors arriving into the region through Birmingham International Airport or ‘Shakespeare’s Airport’ as it likes to market itself particularly in China and the US where so many people study Shakespeare’s work.
Shakespeare’s England, the official tourism guide for Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, Kenilworth and Royal Leamington Spa is spearheading the campaign with a number of exhibitions and events in the region to celebrate the anniversary.
Geoff Spooner, chairman of Shakespeare’s England and general manager of Warwick Castle, said: “With over 10 million passengers passing through Birmingham Airport every year, this is a fantastic opportunity for Shakespeare’s England to showcase some of the world class visitor attractions that its members provide and which are enjoyed by millions of visitors every year.
“This presence will generate increased awareness of Shakespeare’s England and with it, help to promote the equally impressive range of restaurants, theatre, overnight accommodation and many other attractions in this outstanding region.”

HMS Hermes, flagship of the British Taskforce that recaptured the Falklands in 1982 is to be converted into a luxury hotel – reports The Times.
HMS Hermes, now anchored in the Bay of Bengal in India, will have 500 bedrooms, several restaurants, conference and banqueting suites, leisure facilities and a nightclub.
HMS Hermes was an aircraft carrier during its first career so helicopters can easily land on its decks making the ship very ‘user-friendly’ for both a business and leisure point of view.
Conversion work will cost in the region of £85million and is likely to start this summer when the aircraft carrier is finally decommissioned.
Construction work on HMS Hermes started back in 1944. It was launched in 1953 and sold to the Indian Navy following the Falklands War. The Indian Government renamed the ship INS Viraat meaning ‘giant’ in Sanskrit. It holds the record of being the oldest serving aircraft carrier in the world.

The Cafe at Hotel Cafe Royal, which opens next month in central London, is changing the traditional dinner of a starter followed by a main course. Instead diners will be offered several courses of sweet treats — each of which has a wine pairing.
Cafe at Hotel Cafe Royal will offer three dessert tasting menus in the evening.
These include the five-course ‘Sarah in Wonderland’ menu; the three-course ‘Childhood Memories’ menu and the ‘Pick N Mix’ menu which allows guests to choose four dishes from across the menu.
The dishes have been designed by executive pastry chef Sarah Barber, the first female pastry chef in the hotel’s 151-year history.
“There is a massive gap in the market here in London for any decent places to get dessert. In many top restaurants, dessert is an afterthought — it is never the reason that you go there. Here, cake is at the forefront — and all of the dishes are light so you can eat more of them.” said Sarah.
The dessert menus will be available from 3rd March.
Hotel Cafe Royal is located in Regent Street in the heart of London’s West End.

The first images have been published of the Serpentine Gallery’s 2016 pavilion programme; an annual programme which first started in the year 2000.
This year's programme features a range of summer houses designed by international architects. The centrepiece has been created by Bjarke Ingels Group and it resembles a 'mountain of ice cubes’ stretching across the London gallery’s lawn. The structure will be created from a series of box-like fibreglass frames stacked in a brick-wall fashion.
This year, for the first time, the main pavilion commission will be supported by four smaller summer houses in the grounds of the Serpentine Gallery - designed by a range of other architects.
The Bjarke Ingels structure will include a cafe and events space during the day with a programme of arts programmes in the evenings.
The Serpentine Pavilion will be open from 10th June 2016 through to 9th Oct 2016.
