A new brand of urban, lifestyle hotels is to be created from a portfolio of UK properties acquired by the Starwood Capital Group over the past two years. The brand, as yet unnamed, will comprise the Hotel Russell in London; Royal York hotel in York; the Palace Hotel in Manchester; the Blythswood and the Grand Central both in Glasgow and three hotels in Edinburgh:  the Bonham Hotel, the George Hotel and the Roxburgh Hotel.

An investment pot of £100million has been allocated to fund the renovations and expansions that will be required to create the new brand identity.

Work has already begun on the renovation of the George Hotel in Edinburgh (pictured left) and the Royal York in York. Work on the remainder will start later in 2015. The new brand will be launched in 2016, once all the renovations have been completed.

Starwood Capital is an American private investment firm. They have been on a spending spree in the UK over the last two years starting in February 2013 with the acquisition of the Principal Hayley Group of 22 four star hotels in the UK and one near Paris. The group has since added De Vere Venues, Four Pillars Hotels and the Town House Collection.

The Good Housekeeping Institute has opened brand new state-of-the art premises in the heart of Soho in central London. They include a purpose built testing facility where the Institute will continue its work monitoring and testing the latest consumer products.

The building also includes a new cookery school on one floor which is open to the public and available as an events space for a corporate day or press event. The space is equipped with two intelligent screens, Philips Hue lighting and a modern demonstration kitchen, equipped to a professionally high standard. The Cookery School has ten tutorial stations and a reception area, along with a comfortable place to eat.

The Good Housekeeping Institute is located in St Anne's Court just off Wardour Street in Soho, a short walk from Tottenham Court Road tube station.

Crowne Plaza London Kensington has just unveiled a complete refurbishment of all its bedrooms. The hotel’s 162 rooms, including it’s 20 split-level suites, feature a contemporary ‘Regency’ style look with new flooring, new furniture, new desks as well as the hotel’s signature Sleep Advantage beds. The split-level suites have a similar design with a lower ground floor living and dining area with a sofa bed and the main bedroom on the upper floor.

Crowne Plaza London Kensington has recently also completed a renovation of its meeting and events space - a total area of 563 sq-mt across five meeting rooms. Each room has high-speed internet access, natural daylight and air-conditioning. All rooms have been re-painted with the addition of magnetic, ‘write on’ movable walls, new concealed projector facilities, flat screen televisions staggered throughout the rooms and a state-of-the-art AV system operated via an in-house iPad. The maximum capacity is 150 delegates. The hotel garden is also available as event space.

Crowne Plaza London Kensington is located on the Cromwell Road a few minutes’ walk from Gloucester Road tube station. The hotel is within walking distance of London’s ‘museum quarter’ including the Natural History Museum and the V&A Museum.

Union Hanover Securities has gained planning approval for a £126million dual hotel scheme at Stratford City in East London.

One hotel will be a 137-bedroom Adagio aparthotel; the other a 249-bedroom boutique hotel to be named the Penny Brook Hotel.

The Penny Brook Hotel will be a 25-storey tower with recessed facades. It will include a large ground floor restaurant and café area along with conference space. The tower will also feature a top floor restaurant and lounge. The Adagio aparthotel will include 95 studio apartments and 42 one-bedroom apartments.

The hotels will form part of the London Legacy Development Corporation’s masterplan to develop a cultural international quarter around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the site of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Union Hanover Securities has also just received planning permission for a new 180-bedroom boutique Urban Villa hotel alongside the Union Canal Basin in Edinburgh – details
