We are not sure what the Millennials have done to deserve all the attention they are currently receiving from hotel chains. The latest group to chase this in-demand demographic is Accor.

They have just launched their ‘Jo &Joe’ brand of hotels – a brand that blends the best of private rental, hostel and hotel formats.

Jo&Joe is designed to meet the expectations of the Millennials and indeed anyone who values ‘sharing, spontaneity and experience’.

Jo&Joe will take root in busy city centre locations close to public transport and less than 15 minutes from the major point of interest.

Jo&Joe is designed to provide innovative accommodation solutions for people travelling alone, in pairs, in groups or as families. Room rates will start from €25 a night and options include:

'Happy House’: a private area where a guest can relax, work, cook or wash their clothes – like at home.
‘Together’: for guests sharing with private lockers, reading lights, USB ports, shared recreation areas and bathrooms.
‘Yours’:  rooms for two to five people with a private bathroom and kitchen area. Designed for families.
"OOO!"  or Out Of the Ordinary:  unexpected accommodation for singles or for groups of up to six people. The accommodation will be different at each Jo&Joe venue. Original formats include yurts, hammock and caravans ensuring an unforgettable experience.

The bar will be the central feature in a Jo&Joe. It will be a unique design with high visibility from the street thus encouraging local residents to join the hotel guests.

Jo&Joe will offer a simple and authentic restaurant concept with grills, open flame barbecues, woks or wood fire pizzas. A collaborative kitchen will allow the guests to showcase for their culinary talents  if they wish.

Alternatively guests travelling on a budget can keep costs under control by cooking their own meals.

A total of 50 Jo&Joe hotels are set to open by 2020 in ‘destinations popular with Millennials’. Locations will include Paris and Bordeaux (2018) as well as Warsaw, Budapest, Rio and São Paulo.

A menu dated 1899, branded crockery and chamber pots and a resignation letter dated 1916 are just a small sample of items which have been uncovered during the £40million restoration of the Grade II-listed Grand Hotel in the centre of Birmingham – reports the Birmingham Post.

The 1899 menu offers guests ‘plaice a l’Orly’, ‘ox tails a la jardiniere’ and ‘gelee au maraschino’.

The renovation which has taken four years so far has also unveiled a fascinating glimpse into life in the building before it closed in 2002.

Developer Hortons’ Estate has been restoring the historic 1879 building in Colmore Row to its former glory. The redevelopment will see new bars and offices as well as the rebirth of one of Birmingham’s most well-known and respected hotels.

Other finds include a note written in February 1960 by 16 year old waiter, Thomas Carmody, and slipped under the floorboards. His message written on the back of a restaurant menu said “I will come back from the dead to see you’. Thomas, if he is still alive, will be 72 years old now or perhaps he is now stalking the corridors of the Grand Hotel.

Throughout September, St Ermin’s Hotel in Westminster is celebrating its annual ‘honey month’, to coincide with the harvest of honey collected from its resident 350,000 Buckfast bees.

The bees work hard earning their keep at the St Ermins Bee and Bee Hotel.

The bees provide the main ingredient in the hotel’s seasonal Honey Afternoon Tea and Buzzy Bees Kid’s Tea. The hotel’s Caxton Bar and Terrace also feature a selection of special honey cocktails.

In support of urban beekeeping and to encourage sustainability in the city, St. Ermin’s is offering urban beekeeping taster workshops - on the 17th September and 1st October.

The course is a way for participants to get interactive experience handling bees, managing their hives and collecting raw honey. The 2.5-hour workshops also give guidance on what flowers to plant, when and where and how best to site hives in gardens or allotments.

The St. Ermin’s Buckfast bees produce approximately 25lb of honey each year collecting pollen from local gardens including Buckingham Palace and St James’ Park.

Visitors can watch the bee colony in action (behind a glass viewing platform) on the hotel’s third floor Bee Terrace.

Aloft Hotels, part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, is planning to launch voice-activated hotel rooms. The programme, believed to be a world-first, allows guests to control their room using the Siri software from Apple’s iOS.

Each Aloft voice-activated room will be equipped with an iPad running a custom Aloft app. It can be used for controlling the room temperature, lighting and music. It will also speak to a virtual concierge.

Aloft is known for its use of technology. It has also launched what is believed to be the world’s first-ever emoji-only room service.

The voice-activated rooms have already made their debut in the United States in Boston Seaport and Santa Clara. We await the arrival of the technology in the UK.

Currently there are two Aloft-branded hotels in the UK in London at ExCeL and in central Liverpool. Two more are currently on the drawing board in Brighton with a September 2018 planned opening and at London Tobacco Dock in June 2019.
