London Road Fire Station, the Grade II-listed building alongside Piccadilly station in Manchester has been put up for sale. The building currently owned by Britannia Hotels has been the source of a long running battle between them and Manchester City Council.

London Road Fire Station is built in an Edwardian baroque style with a red brick and terracotta façade. It opened in 1906 and operated for 80 years prior to its closure and subsequent sale in 1986.

Britannia Hotels had submitted plans to convert the building into an upscale 227-bedroom hotel with restaurants, bar facilities and event spaces; plans which had been approved by the city authorities.

The development of London Road Fire Station is seen as an integral part of the regeneration of the Piccadilly area in general. If the building is finally converted into a hotel it will rub shoulders with a range of three and four star hotels which currently surround the station.

Union Hanover Securities has received planning permission for a new 180-bedroom boutique Urban Villa hotel alongside the Union Canal Basin in Edinburgh. Urban Villa Edinburgh will feature a 24 hour reception/concierge, lounge and restaurant facilities, a gym and other guest amenities. It will also offer al-fresco dining along its canal frontage.

Every suite will include a kitchen and living room to accommodate the business travellers on an extended stay as well as the weekend leisure market.

Urban Villa Edinburgh will be located in Freer Street and will be part of a larger regeneration of the Fountainbridge district.

Scunthorpe United Football Club have had their plans for a new all-seater stadium approved. The plans form part of an overall £25million out-of-town football and leisure development. Designs for the new stadium have been drawn up by the Frank Whittle Partnership. They incorporate a 12,000 capacity ground as well as a 100-bedroom hotel, a multi-use indoor arena and community sports pitches. The new site is near the club’s present Glanford Park home.

The planning application was approved by North Lincolnshire Council in April. Contractors are expected to be appointed shortly. Work will start on the development as soon as possible with a completion scheduled for July 2016.
