glh, the hotel group which operates Thistle and Amba brands as well as the recently launched Every hotel is planning to launch another new brand. They are making a foray into the value-hotel market with ‘Thistle Express’.

Thistle Express properties will feature smart, modern bedrooms and bathrooms offering high quality comfort and smart televisions, the "fastest" free wi-fi in the economy sector and a choose-your-own-room service before arrival.

Budget hotels now account for 38% of all branded hotel rooms in the UK. Furthermore the sector has added 70,000 rooms over the past 10 years. Mike DeNoma, CEO of glh, said: “You can no longer divide the market into travellers who only stay in economy hotels, versus those who stick to four or five star luxury.  Thistle Express is a brand that caters for the modern traveller”.

Thistle Express will debut with a property in London next year and there are plans to launch a further ten hotels  over the next five years.

An application by The Royal Mint to build a visitor centre at its headquarters in Llantrisant, south Wales has been approved. Visitors will shortly have their first opportunity to view the inner workings of the Royal Mint for the first time in its 1100-year history. They will see how the Royal Mint produces 90 million coins each week for 60 different countries.

The new £7.7million Royal Mint visitor centre will be based at Llantrisant Business Park. It will include an introductory experience, an exhibition presenting the Mint’s 1,100-year history, a display of the museum’s rich collections, educational facilities, a shop and café and a ‘strike your own coin’ experience.. There will be a new visitors’ car and bus park plus a new footbridge connecting the car park with the centre.

Building work on the centre started in April and the Royal Mint visitor centre is expected to be complete by the spring of 2016.

Preliminary work is now underway on the development of the new Southampton Harbour Hotel and Spa at Ocean Village, with construction due to start in the next few months.

The ground floor is set to include a large open plan lounge, restaurant and bar, which will extend out onto a terrace at the end of the existing promontory. The hotel will also feature private moorings.

Southampton Harbour Hotel and Spa at Ocean Village will also feature a selection of meeting and event spaces enjoying a waterfront setting.

The hotel will be operated by the Harbour Hotel Group, which also operates similar styled hotels in Sidmouth, Christchurch, St Ives and Salcombe.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh is about to open its Prince Philip Building, their fourth venue for conferences, meetings and events.

The Royal College has taken the former Edinburgh University language school building, invested £1.5million in a total revamp and transformed it into three floors of event space to accommodate everything from conferences and exhibitions to small scale boardroom meetings. The Prince Philip Building includes a theatre-style auditorium for up to 160 delegates.

The Prince Philip Building will be accessed via the Royal College of Surgeon’s pillared entrance opposite the Festival Theatre, through their private gardens and into a lobby area with its own cloakroom.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and Festival Theatre Edinburgh are now working together to offer their joint facilities which are capable of accommodating up to 1900 delegates for a conference in the heart of Edinburgh. The Festival Theatre is located opposite the College. It boasts the largest stage in Scotland which can be transformed into banqueting space for up to 400 guests. The auditorium seats 1900 delegates and is equipped with cinema quality projection.

Residential accommodation is available at the College's on-site 78-bedroom Ten Hill Place Hotel.
