Research just published shows that budget hotel brands supplied 64% of bedrooms in the country in the first quarter of the year with Premier Inn and Travelodge between them accounting for 52% of that total.

The data published by HVS, AlixPartners AM:PM and STR also shows that Premier Inn and Travelodge are the two most active groups developing brands in the country.

Between them they represent almost half of the new hotels ‘in the pipeline’ with 5,086 and 2,660 new rooms planned, respectively.

The report compares the list of the UK’s top 10 hotel brands in terms of bedroom numbers. Premier Inn is the largest with 67,515 rooms, with Travelodge number two with 39,531 rooms.

In third place is Holiday Inn with 20,707 rooms but with only 430 new rooms planned. In fifth place comes Hilton with 14,793 rooms and a further 200 rooms in development.

Overall, it is the emerging brands that have the most ambitious opening plans: Hampton by Hilton are planning 1,881 new rooms. Hub by Premier Inn are planning 1,396 new rooms.  Holiday Inn Express are planning 1,244 new rooms.

Researchers think this trend will likely continue for the foreseeable future. Smaller budget brands will continue their drive for greater distribution while the two giants, Travelodge and Premier Inn, slug it out to maintain their growth trajectories.
