Back in January this year we reported on plans to demolish a ten-storey building which had housed the Quality Hotel Plymouth.
The building was described as an ‘eyesore’ and it had become a target for anti-social behaviour, including a number of arson attacks.
Since then the building has been demolished and plans have now been revealed to build a new five-star hotel on the site which overlooks Plymouth Hoe.
The proposed £50million development would include a luxury 60-bedroom hotel, conference facilities, a ground floor bistro and bar, leisure facilities including a gym and spa plus a panoramic penthouse with a fine-dining restaurant.
The development will be known as ‘1620’. That is the year the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth for America with the Pilgrim Fathers on board.
It is hoped that the hotel can built by 2019 in time for the Mayflower’s 400th anniversary in 2020.

The Postal Museum is one of the most keenly awaited new venues opening in London.
Due to launch mid-2017, the Postal Museum will open up the now deserted ‘Mail Rail’ tunnels and depot to the general public and it will be available for corporate events hire.
Mail Rail is London’s secret 100-year-old post office railway which was built to transport letters, parcels and postcards through London and beyond.
The driverless electric railway runs for 6.5 miles deep under London, criss-crossing the tube lines and linking six old sorting offices with the mainline stations at Liverpool Street and Paddington.
The system was closed down in 2003.
When the Postal Museum reopens it will offer an ‘industrial’ venue open to the general public and for corporate hire for unique, one-off events - from dinners to award ceremonies.
The events spaces will include the Mail Rail depot and the Postal Museum.
The Mail Rail depot is a blank canvas space set in a historical building with architectural features including vaulted brick arches and ‘railway influences’. It will accommodate up to 275 guests for a standing reception or 140 guests seated.
The Postal Museum is contemporary space with a courtyard and an innovative living wall. The Postal Museum will accommodate up to 140 guests for receptions and parties.
A delegates’ journey on Mail Rail, in specially constructed carriages, can be incorporated into any event.
The Postal Museum and Mail Rail are located Phoenix Place in central London within easy walking distance of Farringdon, Angel, King’s Cross and Chancery Lane stations.
