The Trade Union, Unite, has published plans to construct a major mixed-use development in the grounds of Birmingham Science Park Aston.

If approved the site will become Unite's national education, training and conference centre and will also include a 170-bedroom hotel.  The scheme includes around 32,000 sq. ft. of conference space over two floors and will have the capacity to host up to 1000 delegates. The five-storey hotel will include a restaurant and bar.

The development lies within Birmingham’s Eastside regeneration area near the Learning Quarter, which comprises Aston University and the Sir Doug Ellis Sports Centre.

Plans have been submitted to Birmingham City Council.


Melia Hotels introduce INNSIDE to the UK in May 2015 when the new INNSIDE Manchester hotel is scheduled to open. The 208 bedroom hotel will be located in the First Street development in Manchester city centre. It will overlook the city's international centre for contemporary visual art, theatre and film, HOME, with its two theatres, five cinemas and art gallery.

'Street on First' will be the hotel’s restaurant and bar serving an international menu. Leisure facilities will include a Finnish sauna, aromatic steam room, gym and relaxation area.

Hotel Gotham opens in Manchester city centre on 7th April 2015 - on budget and on time. The 60-bedroom hotel will occupy the top seven floors of 100 King Street. The ground and lower floors of the Grade II-listed, Lutyens-designed building are let to the Jamie's Italian restaurant chain.

Hotel Gotham will feature four suites with private indoor gardens. It will include a restaurant, a roof garden and a private members bar.

The Times of India is reporting that Indian-based Lalit Suri Hospitality plan to convert a former school building next to London's Tower Bridge into a five-star hotel. The former St Olave's Grammar School is currently undergoing restoration to be converted into a five star 70-bedroom boutique hotel. It will be the group's first hotel outside India.

Lalit Suri Hospitality bought the Grade-listed building three years ago. "We don't intend to change the character of this masterpiece but will only restore it to turn it into the hotel," commented Jyotsna Suri, the group's chairman.

The Lalit Hotel is scheduled to open in March 2016.

Titanic Hotel in Liverpool has opened its underground spa. Facilities include a Roman bath-style pool, an aqua thermal zone, a gym and five treatment rooms located between the brickwork arches of what was once a rum warehouse on the Liverpool waterfront.

Titanic Hotel stands on Liverpool’s Stanley Dock. It opened summer 2014 with 153 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar. It also houses amongst the largest meeting and banqueting space in Liverpool. The ground floor Rum Warehouse will seat up to 1000 delegates theatre style. It is a room with floor to ceiling windows and waterfront views. There will be a plaque on the wall in reception at the new Bridewell Hotel which opens shortly in Liverpool stating “Please do not ask for bail because a refusal often offends”. The reason - Liverpool's Bridewell Hotel was formerly a prison. It is set to be transformed into a boutique hotel.

The building was originally designed as a police station and courts complex for the Corporation of Liverpool and it was used as a Liverpool prison for more than 130 years, up until 1997.

Since then various uses have been mooted for the building from apartments to student accommodation. However the developers, Stay Central, began work on the new hotel project 18 months ago.

A quadrangle of former cells will be transformed into 85 modern rooms complete with a hi-spec en-suite bathroom and an LED Smart television. The exercise yard, once open to the elements, has been converted into a glass covered indoor lounge space for leisure as well as business meetings.

Stay Central’s Bridewell Hotel will open this spring. It is located in Cheapside in the heart of Liverpool city centre.

The hospitality industry has form when it comes to converting prisons into hotels. The charge sheet includes the former Oxford prison which closed in 1996 and was converted a few years ago into what is now the Malmaison Oxford. Whilst in London, Great Marlborough Street Magistrate’s Court has been transformed into the five-star Courthouse Hotel.
