Arena Central occupies a 9.2 acre site at the city end of Broad Street facing the new Birmingham Library. The site was previously home to a number of derelict buildings, including the former Carlton Television studios, an exhibition centre, leisure club and multi-storey car park.
Replacing it will be a mixed-use scheme comprising office accommodation plus residential, retail and leisure facilities. It will also feature a landmark urban park as well as a new 200-bedroom Holiday Inn Express Hotel to be developed by Centre Island Ltd, owners of the adjacent Crowne Plaza Birmingham City Centre Hotel.
Site clearance is already underway with the redundant multi-storey car park on the corner of Holliday Street and Bridge Street having been demolished to make way for the hotel. A contractor is due to be appointed autumn 2014 for the 14-storey hotel which should be completed and ready for occupancy in 2016.
