It would also include a block of 43 residential apartments and retail outlets adjacent to the harbour.

The scheme is recommended for approval when it goes before councillors on 27 February 2017.

Two new hotels have appeared on the distant horizon following planning approval – in London and in Sheffield.

In London, planners at Kensington and Chelsea Council have given the thumbs up to the 139,000 sq-ft Exhibition Square (pictured) - the redevelopment of the former Earls Court exhibition complex in west London.

Two gateway buildings have been approved for the project - the first of four new urban villages at Earls Court.

The development will include a new hotel as well as residential units plus a new entrance to Earl’s Court tube station.

The Eden Project hotel will include events and conference facilities.

The hotel will also have classrooms to support Eden’s educational programmes, including its apprenticeship scheme and degree-level courses.

The timber-clad hotel will be split into two blocks. It will be designed to blend into the countryside and have high standards of accessibility, energy efficiency and sustainability.

Existing local features including old trees and stone walls, will be incorporated into the design of the grounds. A meadow and orchard will be planted around the hotel.
