Approval has been granted for the development of a new 160-bedroom Malmaison Hotel in the centre of York.

The site is Yorkshire House, an office block in Rougier Street, dating from 1962 and formerly the offices of Aviva.

Malmaison York will feature a Chez Mal Bar and Brasserie as well as the group’s meeting and events concept, Work + Play.

Malmaison York will become the 16th property for Malmaison within the UK. It will join sister brand Hotel du Vin, which operates a 44–bedroom hotel in York.

Development work is expected to start later this year.

London Stadium is now open for business, with the launch of its meeting and events arm.

London Stadium, in the heart of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, includes a range of events spaces for six to 1,000 delegates, either with views of the stadium bowl or the London skyline.

The style and décor of London Stadium’s meeting and events facilities pays homage both to the rich history of this part of London as well as to the more recent past.

Hence the ‘Royal East Suite’ celebrating the past achievements of the area sits alongside the ‘BM6 Suite’ which celebrate the legacy of Bobby Moore at West Ham United and his influence on the game.

There are nine meeting and events rooms in total - plus 16 boxes. The largest room will seat up to 220 guests for a dinner. Marquee options are also available.

Tours of the facilities can be arranged specifically for meetings and events delegates and dinner guests.

London Stadium is located in the south of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a short walk from Stratford station on the tube, DLR and London Overground rail networks.

Plans for a new £25million hotel and apartments scheme close to York city centre are currently being finalised and are set to be lodged for planning approval later this month.

The 50,000 sq-ft development would include around 42,000 sq-ft for the hotel and about 7,900 sq-ft of apartments. It would be built on the site of an existing car park and a motorcycle accessory shop in Piccadilly.

The development plan includes a 146-bedroom hotel and also features a terrace and a riverside garden with views across the River Foss to the 13th century Clifford’s Tower.

The developer is Northminster and the project is designed by COG Architecture in Leeds.

A new hotel could be developed under plans recently published for the renovation of the historic Bodmin Jail in Cornwall.

Proposals include the conversion and restoration of existing vacant buildings at Bodmin Jail into a 63-bedroom hotel.

Former cell blocks at the jail would house the hotel accommodation and a new two-storey building would also be constructed.

A car park for the hotel would be created in the former prison yard.

Bodmin Jail was built in 1779 and operated until 1927, hosting 50 public hangings in that time. In more recent times the jail has become a popular tourist attraction and has been used to film episodes of the BBC series ‘Poldark’.

If the hotel project does go ahead it will not be the first jail to be converted into a hotel. The 95-bedroom Malmaison Oxford is on the site of the former Oxford Jail.

An application has been submitted to Cornwall Council for the alteration, extension and change of use of the Grade II-listed Bodmin Jail.
